What to know about the Religious Freedom Restoration Act

After a dramatic week of debate in Arkansas over whether a bill protect’s religious freedom or enables discrimination, a bill has been signed. The journey of House Bill 1228, which would eventually begat Senate Bill 975, came at a time when a similar bill in Indiana had caused much controversy and possibly affected the economy of that state. With Arkansas looking to avoid a similar uproar, the Legislature and governor were in the spotlight. Here’s what you need to know:

• House Bill 1228, better known as the Religious Freedom Act, was filed Feb. 2 as “an act to enact the religious freedom restoration act to be known as Mary’s Law; to provide protection for religious practice and to provide remedies and penalties for violating or abusing religious protections; to declare an emergency; and for other purposes.”
