A loss that affects everyone – Independence, neighboring counties have suicide rates higher than national average

September is Suicide Prevention Month. People from all over the country who’ve been affected by suicide lend their voices to both professionals and survivors in trying to let others who are contemplating taking their lives to know that they are not alone.

In 2013, there were 41,149 suicides in the United States. That’s a rate of 12.6 per 100,000, which is approximately 113 suicides every day or one every 13 minutes.

Where does Arkansas fit into this?

“We’re ranked 16th according to 2014 numbers,” said Melissa Jackson, crisis service program manager for the Arkansas Crisis Center. “We have 17.2 per 100,000. Some people think we’re higher now.”
