What’s the difference between a tornado and a funnel cloud?

A tornado causes damage, according to Dennis Cavanaugh, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Little Rock.

Being able to tell the difference between different types of weather was central to Cavanaugh’s lecture at Ozarka College in Ash Flat on Saturday. The free class was offered to those who were interested in becoming storm spotters. After the two-hour lecture, those attending would be eligible for certification as storm watchers.

“What we need is what you can see out your windows,” Cavanaugh told the gathering of more than a dozen people.
