Prescribed burn to rejuvenate wildlife – Blanket of smoke covers central Sharp County

The Nature Conservancy in Arkansas implemented three prescribed burns within the boundary of the Harold E. Alexander Spring River Wildlife Management Area at the Rock Creek Natural Area just a few miles south of Hardy. TNC carried out one of the burns; the others were handled by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

The fire was set by burn units whose goal was to restore the terrestrial habitats for at-risk species.

There is no set interval as to how often the prescribed burns occur but there are higher return intervals, according to Randy Brents, the AGFC’s prescribed fire coordinator.
