Scouts, Rotary Clubs share common vision

Throughout their existence, Rotary Clubs and Scouts have been partners in many endeavors.

The two groups share a similar set of principles and goals, both emphasizing character building and good citizenship. Rotary International’s Motto and the Four Way Test is quite similar to the Scout Oath, Law, Motto and Slogan.

And, of course, many Rotary members are former Scouts.

One of those Rotary members, Jacob Landers, is still involved in scouting.

Landers is senior district executive for Boy Scouts of America Quapaw Area Council. He spoke to the Batesville Rotary about this connection on Monday at their weekly meeting at Kelley Wyatt’s in Batesville.

“There is a lot of support and partnership between Scouts and Rotary,” Landers said to begin as he went into the history of the two groups and their founders.

Rotary International and the Scouting movement were founded around the same time, in an era that marked the end of the wild frontier and the beginning of a truly industrialized and globalized world.
