Meeting SharpCo’s challenges head on – Spring River ambulance strives to keep modern while still saving lives

ASH FLAT — For emergency medical technicians in Sharp County, the geography can be a challenge. Unlike most other counties in Arkansas, it is long and narrow, without a convenient geographical center. It’s also very rural, with a very low population density, and neighbors sometimes are miles apart. Many of the roads are not paved and low-water bridges that are prone to flooding are on many of these rural routes.

For Spring River Paramedic Ambulance Service, facing these logistical challenges is an everyday thing.

“Very rural areas are always an issue,” said general manager Bart Schulz.

Sharp County is 606 square miles. It’s approximately 55 miles from the south end at Cave City to the north end at the Missouri state line. From east to west, the longest distance is approximately 35 miles.
