The final day of the Independence County Fair is a special day set aside for veterans. Despite the temperature being in the mid-90s with a heat index of more than 100 degrees, dozens of veterans, their families and people expressing their respect showed up for the military appreciation day on Saturday.
Each year, veterans are put in the spotlight, with each branch of service given recognition on stage and three inductees brought into the Veterans Wall of Fame, which is on the corner of the fairgrounds.
This year’s inductees included one who was special to one of the veterans committee members.
Charles Jordan, the co-chairman of the Veterans Day Committee, inducted his father, Robert Jordan, who he never got the chance to know.
Charles was just an infant, just months old, when his father was called to service in the Navy during World War II.
